// the process

From charging session to
payout in your account

You link your charger once. We do the rest.

  1. You

    You link your charger

    Once, via API or OCPP. Your charging sessions then come in on their own and you never have to submit a meter reading again.

  2. Joulo

    We register your charging data with the NEa

    Every kWh you charge at home is submitted to the Dutch Emissions Authority. Joulo is on the official list of registration providers.

  3. The market

    The market buys your ERE credits

    Fuel suppliers have to cut their emissions and buy Emission Reduction Units to do so. That is where your money comes from.

  4. You

    You get paid every quarter

    The money lands in your account each quarter. What you earn depends on the market price at the time we sell.

Connect once. The payout arrives on its own.

// Healthy skepticism

Money for home charging sounds too good to be true

So we show you where the money comes from • and you can verify every sale yourself in our open sales ledger.

Where the money comes from

Fuel suppliers are legally required to reduce the CO₂ emissions of transport. They do this by buying EREs: proof of avoided CO₂. Every kWh you charge at home instead of refuelling delivers that saving • which makes it worth money.

Why through Joulo

The NEa sets requirements for registering parties that an individual household cannot meet. Joulo B.V. is on the official NEa list of registered ERE service providers and bundles your charging sessions with those of thousands of other drivers.

Verify it yourself

Every ERE sale is in our public sales ledger: month, volume and realised price. No promises upfront, but sales that have already happened.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

ERE stands for Emission Reduction Units. From 1 January 2026, EV drivers can earn money because every kWh charged at home represents a CO₂ saving. The Senate adopted the bill on 31 March 2026 • the ERE system is now enshrined in law. Your charging sessions count back to 1 January 2026, even if you sign up later in the year.

You connect your charging station once. After that Joulo automatically reads every charging session, calculates your ERE's, submits them to the NEa, and pays you out every quarter. You don't have to do anything else.

Your earnings depend on the ERE market. Expect €0.12 to €0.15 net per kWh (indicative, July 2026); our latest sale netted €0.123. Charging 2,000 kWh per year at home works out to roughly €240 to €300. The 20% service fee is already deducted • Joulo does not promise a fixed price.

Use our charger checker. Most modern chargers with a built-in MID meter are eligible. No MID meter? Request a quote for a MID-certified charger.

20% service fee incl. VAT, and nothing else • no subscription, no fixed costs. Every calendar year you stay a customer lowers your fee by 1 percentage point, down to 17% after three years. With referrals it can drop further, down to 10%.

Payouts happen quarterly. You can track your earnings in your personal dashboard.

Yes, per calendar year • cancellable yearly. You can cancel at any time, free of charge; because the NEa allows one booking service provider per connection (EAN) per calendar year, your cancellation takes effect at the end of the current year. Want to switch to another provider on 1 January? Cancel by 30 November. You sign the authorisation once for five calendar years, so you don't have to re-sign every year • the NEa requires a fixed term in whole calendar years, so tacit renewal is not allowed. If your contract ends, the authorisation lapses automatically.
