ERE credits: how home charging earns you money
Every kWh you charge at home avoids CO₂. We sell that saving as EREs (Emission Reduction Units) and pay out the proceeds to you every quarter.
A built-in MID meter on your charger is required for participation. Compare brands in the MID charger check, or run the charger check for your setup.
Joulo handles the entire registration as your ERE service provider. Want to start right away? See how ERE registration works at Joulo.

the short answer
An ERE (emission reduction unit, also known as an ERE credit) is a tradable proof of 1 kilogram of avoided CO₂ chain emissions. If you charge at home on a charger with a built-in MID meter, every kWh you charge earns EREs • Joulo registers them with the NEa and sells them for you. In our most recent ERE sale (September 2026) that came to €0.123 net per kWh charged at the standard service fee. Payout follows quarterly, once the sale has settled.

the principle
The polluter pays
Oil companies must buy ERE's to offset their pollution. That money goes to people who do charge clean • like you. No subsidies, no hassle.
the process
How it works
Step 1
Charge
You charge your car at home. Your charger tracks how much you charge via the built-in MID meter.
Step 2
Register
Joulo automatically registers your kWh with the NEa. You don't have to do a thing.
Step 3
Earn
Joulo sells your EREs and you receive the earnings • paid out quarterly.
the calculation
How your earnings are calculated
Official NEa formula (RED III)
Grid power
renewable: 50.5%
2,000 kWh → 665 ERE's
€260 net / year
Market price €0.49 per ERE • €0.16 gross and €0.13 net per kWh after 20% service fee. Actual market price is determined daily via OTC trading.
the scheme
From HBE to ERE: what changed in 2026
Until 2026 the unit was called HBE: Renewable Fuel Unit. Since 1 January 2026 the law targets avoided CO₂ instead of delivered renewable energy. The new unit is the ERE: Emission Reduction Unit.
One ERE represents 1 kilogram of avoided CO₂ in the chain, compared with fossil fuel. At the conversion on 1 May 2026 every HBE became 46 ERE credits. The NEa (Dutch Emissions Authority) runs the register.
New since 2026: home chargers take part too. The obligation for fuel suppliers has existed since 2015, but until 2025 only companies and charge point operators could register. Fuel suppliers must show 14.4% emission reduction in 2026 and 28.4% in 2030. That rising obligation keeps demand for ERE credits up.
requirements
When do you qualify?
Four conditions decide whether your charging sessions earn ERE credits.
Factory-fitted MID meter
Your charger has a built-in, MID-certified meter. A separate sub-meter in the fuse box does not count. No MID? Then upgrade to a charger with a MID meter, or request a Secondary Allocation Point (SAP) from your grid operator.
Energy contract in your name
The EAN code of your connection is in your name. Driving a lease car? The payment goes to the holder of the energy contract: you as the resident, not the lease company.
One registration provider per connection
You authorise one registration provider for your EAN. Switching is possible, double registration is not. So choose deliberately.
Retroactive to 1 January 2026
Sessions since 1 January 2026 count, as long as the MID meter measured them. Sessions from before your MID meter never count, not even retroactively.
costs
What does it cost?
Joulo charges a 20% service fee on the sale proceeds of your ERE credits. No subscription, no upfront costs: you only pay when we sell. Cancel yearly, paid out quarterly. Sign up via a partner such as keuze.nl and you pay 1 percentage point less. Referral discounts are available too.

How are your ERE credits sold?
ERE credits are not traded on an exchange but via brokers. We pool the credits of all our customers and sell every quarter. That volume gets us a market price a single household could not reach alone.
Every sale is listed in our open sales log: date, volume, price and broker. So you see exactly what your credits fetched and what you keep net.

EREs make home charging cheaper
The ERE proceeds work as a discount on your charging costs: count on €0.12 to €0.15 net per kWh charged at home.

Why a MID meter?
The NEa only accepts measurement data from a calibrated MID meter built into your charger. That makes every kWh provable. Use our compatibility check to see if your charger has one.
